The United Independent School District's Secondary Mathematics Program is dedicated to providing students with meaningful, high-quality learning experiences that will empower them to thrive in the 21st century. Our mission is to prepare every student for future success by fostering a deep appreciation for mathematics and its real-world applications. We are committed to a collaborative partnership with parents, educators, and community members to ensure that our students become productive, cognitive adolescents ready for post-secondary education or a skilled workforce.

Program Overview

Our purpose is to provide dynamic instructional support to our educators, ensuring that the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards are seamlessly integrated into our curriculum. We achieve this through a data-driven approach, targeted professional development, and continuous feedback. This commitment allows our teachers to challenge, excite, and inspire students with hands-on projects and real-life learning opportunities that are relevant to their lives.

The program's focus is to provide a comprehensive and engaging curriculum that addresses the diverse needs of all learners. We strive to create an environment where students build a strong mathematical foundation, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and are well-prepared for their future academic and career paths.

United Independent School District currently offers a variety of courses designed to meet these goals, from middle school through high school.

6th Grade Math - In Grade 6 Mathematics, students will apply mathematical process standards to build a strong foundation in number and operations, proportionality, and algebraic reasoning. The curriculum focuses on developing fluent computational skills and a solid understanding of concepts through problem-solving models and real-world applications.

6th Grade Advanced Math - This course compacts and rearranges the knowledge and skills from both Grade 6 and Grade 7 TEKS to accelerate instruction for students. Students will explore advanced concepts in proportionality, expressions, equations, and data science, preparing them for future enrollment in Algebra I by Grade 8.

7th Grade Math - Students in Grade 7 Mathematics will use mathematical process standards to further develop their understanding of proportional relationships, probability, and algebraic reasoning. This course focuses on building upon prior knowledge to solve problems involving rational numbers, geometry concepts, and data analysis. It also emphasizes making predictions and finding solutions for both simple and compound events, as well as exploring personal financial literacy.

7th Grade Advanced Math - This course is designed to accelerate student learning by compacting and rearranging the Grade 7 and Grade 8 TEKS. It covers advanced concepts in proportionality, expressions, equations, and data analysis, preparing students to take Algebra I in Grade 8. The curriculum focuses on developing a deep understanding of mathematical relationships, using technology to solve problems, and exploring foundational concepts of functions.

8th Grade Math - In Grade 8 Mathematics, students use mathematical processes to explore and apply concepts of real numbers and proportional relationships, including slope and foundational concepts of functions. The curriculum also focuses on using geometry to solve problems involving volume, the Pythagorean Theorem, and transformations, preparing students for success in Algebra I.

PreAP Algebra I - This course is a rigorous and comprehensive study of algebraic concepts, leveraging the College Board's curriculum to deepen students' mathematical understanding and fluency. It focuses on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills through real-world applications, preparing students for success in future advanced mathematics courses.

Algebra I - In this course, students will build on their middle school knowledge of linear relationships and proportionality to study linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. Students will use technology to explore data, analyze statistical relationships, and connect functions to real-world situations.

This course is also offered as a full-year option for students who need additional time to reinforce fundamental skills and master new concepts.

Geometry - In Geometry, students will build on their knowledge from Algebra I to strengthen their mathematical reasoning skills within geometric contexts. The course focuses on precise terminology, symbolic representations, and the development of proofs, exploring concepts in coordinate and transformational geometry, logical arguments, two- and three-dimensional figures, and circles. It will also cover the use of proportional reasoning to solve problems related to trigonometry.

PreAP Geometry with Statistics - This course provides a conceptual bridge between algebra and geometry, focusing on measurement in the contexts of shape, space, and data. A key aspect of the curriculum is a dedicated unit on statistics and probability that supports students' quantitative literacy. This course prepares students for the rigor of AP-level mathematics by emphasizing logical argumentation, proofs, and a deeper understanding of geometric and statistical concepts.

Mathematical Models with Applications - This course is designed to build on students' knowledge from previous math courses and prepare them for various post-secondary choices, including Algebra II. Students will learn to apply mathematics through real-world experiences in personal finance, science, engineering, and social sciences, using a mathematical modeling cycle to analyze problems and communicate solutions. The curriculum focuses on developing algebraic, graphical, and geometric reasoning to recognize patterns, model information, and make informed decisions.

Algebra II - This course broadens students' knowledge of quadratic functions, exponential functions, and systems of equations. Students will extend their understanding to new function families, including logarithmic, square root, cubic, and rational functions. The curriculum also focuses on connecting functions to their inverses and using data analysis and algebraic methods in both mathematical and real-world situations.

PreAP Algebra II - This course is designed to optimize students' readiness for college-level mathematics by extending the conceptual understanding of functions and data analysis developed in previous courses. The curriculum focuses on three big ideas: functions, operations with functions, and inverse functions. By exploring a variety of function families, students learn to model authentic, real-world scenarios and use mathematical reasoning to make informed decisions. It is an approach that concentrates on the mathematical content and skills that matter most for college readiness.

Precalculus - Precalculus is a course designed to prepare students for calculus, focusing on a function point of view to strengthen conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning. The curriculum deepens students' fluency with algebra and trigonometry, extending their ability to make connections and apply concepts at higher levels. Students will systematically work with functions and their multiple representations to model and solve mathematical and real-world problems.

AP Precalculus - AP Precalculus is a college-level course that prepares students for calculus and other STEM and non-STEM majors. The curriculum focuses on building a deep mastery of functions, including polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Through regular practice, students will build a deep mastery of modeling and functions, and they will examine scenarios through multiple representations (graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal). The course emphasizes symbolic manipulation, mathematical reasoning, and the communication of ideas in real-world contexts, and provides an excellent foundation for calculus.

Advanced Quantitative Reasoning - Advanced Quantitative Reasoning is a fourth-year math course designed to equip students with the skills necessary for college, careers, and life. The curriculum focuses on applying high school math concepts to real-world situations, including numerical reasoning, probability, statistical analysis, and finance. Students will develop their reasoning, planning, and communication skills to make decisions and solve problems by modeling with algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and discrete mathematics.

AP Calculus AB - This introductory college-level course is a deep exploration of differential and integral calculus, equivalent to a first-semester college course. Students will cultivate their understanding of limits, derivatives, and integrals through real-world problems presented graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. The curriculum prepares students for future study in mathematics, science, or engineering by developing skills in mathematical reasoning, justification, and communication.
