United for the Future
Stronger Schools. Stable Resources. Brighter Futures.
United ISD has always stood for strong neighborhood schools, excellent teachers, and learning environments where every child can thrive.
Message From the Superintendent
Dear UISD Family,
United ISD has always stood for strong neighborhood schools, excellent teachers, and learning environments where every child can thrive. Our community has a long history of supporting public education, and we remain deeply committed to protecting the quality of education our students deserve.
Today, we are at a critical point in our district’s future. Like many school districts across Texas, we are facing declining enrollment, rising operational costs, and inadequate state and federal funding. When schools lose students, resources such as teachers, staffing, academic programs, and funding become stretched across too many campuses. If we continue in the same way, the district will eventually be forced to make reductions that directly impact classrooms and district operations.
“United for the Future” is our proactive plan to align resources, protect teachers and programs, and ensure every school remains a strong school. This work may include campus consolidations, boundary realignment, and facility redesigns. Unfortunately, these options have reached us only now, as other communities have already implemented them. These decisions are difficult, but they are necessary to reinvest in our classrooms and protect the learning experiences our students deserve.
By acting now, we can:
- Maintain strong academic programs
- Protect teachers and reduce the risk of larger class sizes
- Ensure schools are well-staffed and well-resourced
- Strengthen fine arts, athletics, and enrichment opportunities
Provide stable, high-quality learning environments
Doing nothing would lead to deeper financial strain and reduced support for students. Taking responsible steps today ensures a brighter future for our district.
This process will unfold over the coming months. We will communicate timelines, data, community meeting opportunities, and transition resources to ensure families and staff stay informed every step of the way. We are committed to transparency and a student-first approach throughout this work.
United ISD has never backed away from doing what is right for children. With careful planning, community input, and responsible stewardship, we will protect educational excellence for this generation and the next.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gerardo Cruz
Superintendent of Schools

Like many school districts across Texas, UISD is experiencing declining student enrollment, rising operational costs, and a lack of increased state funding. When enrollment drops, resources such as teachers, programs, and support services must be spread across more campuses. Consolidation allows us to strengthen class sizes, protect academic programs, and ensure every school is well-staffed and well-resourced.
-
Consolidation and realignment can create:
- More access to academic programs and electives
- Stronger fine arts and athletic opportunities
- Improved student services and support staff
- Consistent class sizes and full teaching teams
- Increased campus resources and updated facilities
Our goal is to create stronger schools, not fewer opportunities.
-
This planning process is designed to prevent deeper cuts in the future. As enrollment declines, funding decreases. Acting now allows us to protect teachers, maintain programs, and avoid larger class sizes or program reductions later.
-
Our priority is to retain employees. Through retirements, transfers, and reassignments, staff are expected to remain employed within UISD. If campuses are consolidated, employees will receive support in transitioning to new campuses.
-
The Board of Trustees will review data and recommendations over the next several months. Any changes will be communicated well in advance, and families will receive transition support and guidance on enrollment.
-
The Transportation Department will ensure that all eligible students receive transportation based on their new school location and distance from their residence. With the exception of special education transportation services, all other eligible students must fall within the 2-mile radius eligibility criteria. The final list of eligible riders will be determined when a final decision is made for the new school location.
-
We will provide:
- Campus tours and transition events
- Parent meetings and FAQs for each affected school
- Assistance with transportation, enrollment, and schedules
- Counseling and emotional support for students who need it
-
The district is reviewing:
- Enrollment and demographic trends
- Facility capacity and condition
- Staffing needs and program access

- Financial impact of maintaining under-enrolled schools
-
Yes. The district will hold public meetings, community conversations, and campus-specific information sessions. Parents, staff, and community members will be encouraged to participate, ask questions, and share feedback.
-
