A Passion for Science and a Heart for Students, Meet Trautmann Elementary’s New Principal

From teaching chemistry in the classroom to shaping science education across United ISD, Celita Escamilla has spent her career helping students discover their potential and supporting educators in meaningful ways.
Now, after more than 21 years in education, she's beginning a new chapter with the district.
United ISD is proud to announce the appointment of Escamilla as the new principal of Trautmann Elementary, where she brings extensive experience as a teacher, instructional leader, and campus administrator.
Escamilla began her career in 2005 as a chemistry teacher at United South High School before serving in various instructional and leadership roles, including science specialist with Region One Education Service Center, science coordinator for United ISD's Curriculum and Instruction Department, and most recently, assistant principal at Elias Herrera Middle School.
Among the accomplishments she is most proud of is helping strengthen science instruction across the district. During her time in Curriculum and Instruction, she helped develop United ISD's science scope and sequence by creating engaging lessons, projects, and instructional resources designed to support student achievement. She also partnered with elementary campuses to expand STEM initiatives and create more hands-on learning experiences for students.
"I am truly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as principal of Trautmann Elementary," Escamilla said. "I would like to thank the United ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz for their confidence and trust in me. I look forward to building meaningful relationships and continuing to serve our students, staff, and families with dedication and purpose."
A Martin High School graduate and proud third-generation college graduate, Escamilla earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin before completing a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction with a minor in Instructional Technology from Texas A&M International University. She credits her family's lifelong commitment to education for inspiring her own journey and shaping the leader she is today.
That passion continues at home, where she and her husband, Luis, also an educator and administrator, are raising their two children, Cassia and Leo, who proudly attend United ISD schools.
Outside of work, you'll likely find Escamilla training for her next race. An avid runner, she enjoys early morning runs through Laredo and recently completed the Austin Half Marathon. She says those early mornings help shape the mindset she brings to leadership.
Her favorite saying is, "Win the morning, win the day."
"I believe that starting my day with purpose and positivity sets the tone for everything that follows," Escamilla shared. "The energy and mindset I cultivate each morning naturally carries into every aspect of the day, allowing me to lead with intention, optimism, and focus."
It's a mindset she looks forward to bringing to Trautmann Elementary, where she hopes to continue building on the strong foundation already established at the campus.
