Johnson High School Graduate Ricardo Palomares Named Gates Scholar

One of the country’s most prestigious and competitive scholarships for high school seniors was awarded to a proud Wolf. United ISD congratulates Johnson High School graduate Ricardo Palomares on being selected as a recipient of the prestigious Gates Scholarship, provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Each year, approximately 300 students nationwide are selected from a pool of more than 50,000 applicants to become Gates Scholars. The scholarship recognizes exceptional academic achievement, leadership, perseverance, and financial need while providing a full, last-dollar scholarship to help students earn a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university in the United States.
In addition to covering tuition, housing, books, and other educational expenses, Gates Scholars receive mentorship, leadership development opportunities, and access to an extensive network of scholars and professionals.
For Ricardo, the moment he learned he had been selected was one he will never forget.
“I didn’t actually believe it,” he said. “I jumped up from my couch, re-read the email, refreshed it, and ran upstairs to tell my brother, the only other person home at the time. My initial reaction was disbelief, denial, and shock.”
Ricardo credits his success to the unwavering support of his family, teachers, and friends.
“My family values education and has always been my lifeline,” he said. “My teachers have taught me more than what’s in the classroom, and each one has left a lasting impression on my life. My friends have also inspired me to stay focused on success.”
This fall, Ricardo will attend Texas A&M University in College Station, where he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in architecture, with the possibility of earning a master’s degree. He also hopes to explore opportunities in real estate while building a career in architecture.
Beyond academics, Ricardo enjoys 3D modeling, mathematics, fostering animals, stargazing, board games, and spending time with family and friends. He says he looks forward to the new experiences and challenges that college will bring.
“I am thankful to be a recipient of this award and will ensure that I utilize this scholarship to its fullest extent,” Ricardo said. “I will do my best to honor my family, school, and myself in the future. I’ll continue to help people, and I’m excited to see what’s next.”
UISD also recognizes his counselors, including Johnson High School counselor Elizabeth Renteria, whose guidance and support helped Ricardo achieve his goals.
United ISD congratulates Ricardo Palomares on this remarkable achievement and wishes him continued success as he embarks on his journey at Texas A&M University.
