Students Take Center Stage at UISD’s 4th Annual World Down Syndrome Fashion Show

The United ISD Special Education Department and Cherish Center proudly hosted its 4th Annual World Down Syndrome Day Fashion Show recently at Elias Herrera Middle School. The event celebrated inclusion, confidence, and the unique talents of students, highlighting the importance of recognizing and uplifting individuals with Down syndrome within the community.
This year’s fashion show brought together students, educators, families, and community supporters for an afternoon filled with joy, creativity, and empowerment. Students took the runway with confidence and pride, showcasing their personal style, individuality and spirit. The event is enjoyed by the students and parents alike and highlights the importance of ensuring every student is seen, celebrated, and supported.
The students presented the event with the support of Emma Leza, UISD Associate Superintendent, Board Member Dianelle Martinez, and the leadership of the Special Education Department. Models Marcela Delgado and Gabriela Ramirez of Falcon Bank volunteer every year to mentor and prepare the students for their runway walk, sometimes giving them a little help on the stage.
In recognition of this meaningful celebration, a proclamation was issued by City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño declaring March 21, 2026 as World Down Syndrome Day in Laredo, Texas. The proclamation highlights the importance of awareness and inclusion, noting that “approximately one in every 700 children are born with Down syndrome… representing about 400,000 people living in the United States today.” It further recognizes that individuals with Down syndrome “possess an immense amount of abilities, and are active participants in educational, occupational, social, and recreational circles of our community.”
The proclamation also emphasizes the significance of March 21 as a global day of recognition, symbolizing the triplication of the 21st chromosome, and acknowledges the United Nations’ official designation of World Down Syndrome Day to raise public awareness and promote inclusion worldwide.
UISD remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all students are empowered to reach their full potential. Events like the World Down Syndrome Day Fashion Show celebrate student achievement and strengthen the community’s commitment to acceptance, respect, and opportunity for all.
