UISD’s J.B. Alexander H.S. Band & Dazzler Elite Dance Company Shine Bright at State

What began as months of early mornings, late-night rehearsals, weekends and unshakable dedication culminated in a moment of South Texas pride, as the John B. Alexander High School Outdoor Performance Ensemble (OPE) and Dazzler Elite Dance Company (DEDC) represented Laredo on the grand stage of the 2025 UIL State Marching Contest, held at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Monday, November 3.
Their captivating field production, Beyond the Break, showcased the culmination of months of dedication, discipline, and artistry. This year marks the program’s seventh overall appearance at the UIL State Marching Contest and fifth consecutive qualification, ranking 37th among more than 250 Class 6A bands statewide!
For the students, the experience was both emotional and inspiring. “Performing at the UIL State Marching Contest was an incredible blessing and true milestone for our program,” reflected Drum Major Haylee Bryand. “We carried not only our school’s name but the pride of our entire South Texas community. Seeing our parents and supporters in the stands cheering for us… made it all worth it.”
Led by Head Band Director Joshua A. Martinez, the Mighty Bulldog Band’s leadership team includes assistant directors Ricardo Fuentes, Katherine Garcia, Jose C. Martinez, Adam Dinkins, Armando Blanco, and with the Dazzler Elite Dance Company under the direction of Kendra Peña. Together, they continue to uphold a legacy of musical and artistic excellence that has positioned the JBA program as a source of pride for Laredo and the South Texas region.
“The music educators of our program could not be more proud of our students and the incredible display of excellence they continue to present,” said Martinez. “Our consistent pursuit of excellence allows these young performers to grow daily and hold true to our motto of ‘Building the Future through the Art of Music Education.’”
“Representing not only our school but the entire South Texas region reminded me of the power of what we do here in Laredo,” Dazzler Elite Captain Amairani Ramon added. “Standing alongside programs with far greater resources…it was inspiring to see how our community’s heart and dedication shine through. We proved that no matter where you come from, excellence and passion can make an impact far beyond your city limits.”
