A standing ovation for UISD music teacher Monique Godines!

After 31 years of inspiring students through music, Roberto Santos Elementary music teacher Monique Godines received a standing ovation as KGNS Teacher of the Month.
What began as a normal school day quickly turned into an emotional surprise as KGNS reporter Mindy Casso, sponsor Joey Tellez of the Tellez Law Firm, school administrators, colleagues, students, and even her husband, Ramon "Moni" Godines, gathered to honor her years of dedication to UISD.
Godines, who began teaching at just 22 years old, said she was completely shocked, thinking a presenter was simply visiting for Career Day. Instead, she was met with cheers, hugs, gifts, and a $250 check recognizing the impact she has made in the classroom and throughout the community.
Known not only as an educator but also as the lead singer of local band “Little Sister,” Godines has spent decades helping students discover confidence through music. Nominations praised her ability to help even the shyest students break out of their shell, discover hidden talents, and create a classroom where learning feels fun, relaxed, and inspiring.
“It’s an honor and a beautiful way to retire,” Godines shared emotionally. Though retiring was not an easy decision, she plans to focus more on singing and staying active in the community and working at a local boutique.
Joey Tellez said visiting schools each month reminds him of the teachers who shaped his own life, adding that educators like Godines go far beyond the classroom by pouring their hearts into their students and school communities. He is happy to help recognize two teachers a month, but knows there are many more deserving teachers in our community.
Congratulations to Monique Godines on a well-deserved recognition and an unforgettable career. Go Rams!
