UHS Early College Dean Andrea Garza Named 2026 Texas High School Assistant Principal of the Year

United Independent School District proudly announces that Andrea Garza, Dean of the Early College Academy at United High SchooL (UHS), has been named the 2026 Texas High School Assistant Principal of the Year.
Each year, the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) recognizes outstanding campus leaders from the state’s twenty education service centers. Representing Region 1, Garza emerged as the top choice following a rigorous finalist interview process, selected for her exemplary performance, outstanding leadership, and commitment to raising the bar for educational excellence in the Lone Star State.
As the state winner, Garza will now represent Texas as a nominee for the National Assistant Principal of the Year award, presented by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
Garza, who joined the United High School leadership team in 2024 after serving at United South High School, is widely recognized as a dynamic instructional leader and passionate advocate for public education. She holds a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction from Texas A&M International University and a Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies from the University of Minnesota. Her history of elevating student outcomes has earned her numerous honors, including HEB Secondary Leadership Teacher of the Year, Texas Teacher of the Year Finalist, Region 1 Teacher of the Year, and UISD Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Reflecting on this statewide honor, Garza shared her pride in representing the community she serves. “I am very proud to represent United High School, United ISD, and the greater Laredo community,” Garza said. “Our role as public school leaders is vital to providing equitable opportunities for all students, fostering lifelong learning, and shaping civic leaders that build and sustain our communities.
Garza credits her success to the strong partnerships she has built across the district.
“I am forever grateful for the opportunities I have had to grow alongside my partners- school administrators, teachers, students, and their families,” she said. “United ISD and the community we serve is beautiful, vibrant, and unique. They deserve to be showcased at the highest levels, and I am humbled to have this platform to share our collective success.”

Garza’s recognition not only puts UISD and Laredo on the map, but all of South Texas. District and campus leaders praised Garza for her visionary leadership and positive influence.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mrs. Garza. Andrea leads with such compassion, purpose, and a genuine commitment to supporting all students,” added UISD Associate Superintendent for District Administration and Student Services. “This recognition is a tremendous honor for her, for the Longhorn Family, and for all of us at UISD.”
UHS Principal Jessica Salazar described her as “a beacon of positivity and inspiration, whose innovative approach uplifts every student and staff member she encounters. This significant honor is a testament to her tireless dedication and visionary leadership—and her Longhorn Family is incredibly proud of her,” Salazar added.
As Dean of the Early College Academy, Garza continues to expand opportunities that prepare students for success beyond high school. “I take great pride in the growth of the UHS Early College program,” she added. “Each year I am excited to welcome new cohorts and refine our program. My UHS Early College mission extends beyond academic rigor; I am equally dedicated to the leadership and character development necessary to shape community leaders and ensure success in future academic pursuits.”

Garza will be formally honored in June at the 2026 TASSP Summer Workshop in Dallas, where she will be celebrated alongside exceptional administrators from across the state.
