UISD’s “Field of Dreams” Conference Connects Families with District and Community Resources

The United Independent School District hosted its annual Special Education Parent Conference at Antonio Gonzalez Middle School, bringing together families, educators, and community partners for a day of learning, connection, and support.
Executive Director of Special Education Mrs. Laura De Los Santos welcomed parents and highlighted the importance of providing families with access to programs and services offered through both UISD and the City of Laredo to support students with special needs.
Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz, Associate Superintendent Mrs. Rebecca Coss-Morales, and Board of Trustees Secretary Mrs. Michelle Molina attended the event, reaffirming UISD’s commitment to helping families access the information and tools they need to support their children’s educational journey.
Keynote speaker Dr. Richard Chamberlain, Health Director for the City of Laredo, emphasized the importance of collaboration between schools, families, and community agencies to ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
The program also featured Mrs. Maria Justice, owner of Dos Marias Restaurant, who shared her perspective as a local business leader and advocate for community engagement, and Mrs. Martha Gonzalez, a UISD parent, who delivered an inspiring testimony about her experiences raising a child in the Special Education program.
Parents participated in sessions focused on advocacy, classroom collaboration, and community-based programs designed to strengthen family engagement and student success.
Dr. Cruz noted the importance of connecting families with resources having lifelong value. “There is going to be a life after our students graduate, and it’s just good to have our parents informed as to what our community can provide," he said.
UISD Board of Trustees District 6 Secretary Michelle Molina emphasized the opportunity this conference provides for the school district to grow with families and address their ever changing needs. “This is a very important conference that we host for our parents,” said Mrs. Molina. “I’m very thankful to our special education department. This is something that we work towards throughout the year to put together sessions, to hear our parents' concerns and their needs of where we can always improve.”
The “Field of Dreams” conference reflected UISD’s belief that when families, educators, and community partners work together, every student can reach their full potential.
