UISD Shines Spotlight on Dyslexia Awareness with District Proclamation

The UISD Special Education Department hosted its annual Dyslexia Proclamation ceremony on October 2nd at the Student Activity Center, bringing together educators, students, and community leaders to highlight the importance of early identification and support for students with dyslexia.
The event featured a keynote proclamation delivered by Honorable Ernesto Gonzalez, U.S. District Judge for the Western District of Texas, who emphasized the importance of advocacy and awareness for students with learning differences.
In recognition of their leadership and support, UISD principals and dyslexia teachers were in attendance and thanked for their commitment to ensuring that students with the condition receive the tools and interventions necessary to succeed.
Veterans Memorial Elementary students with dyslexia gave a heartfelt presentation, while students from the Cherish Center served food, showcasing their strength and talents.
UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz highlighted the district’s commitment to addressing dyslexia through early intervention and strong instructional support.
“Sometimes the dyslexia disability goes misdiagnosed as if the student cannot read. That’s not necessarily the case,” said Dr. Cruz. “It’s just that things are happening in the brain where the right connections aren’t being met, but that doesn’t mean our students can’t read. We have many interventions in place that our principals and teachers utilize to be sure we meet the students’ needs so they can read at grade level.”
With a student population of close to 40,000, UISD currently has 3,291 students diagnosed with dyslexia. Research shows that 1 in 5 children and adults have dyslexia and they don't know it, which suggests that nearly 7,000 UISD students may remain undiagnosed. Many of these students often compensate with other abilities, making it crucial for the district to continue expanding awareness and early screening. Parents who suspect their child may be dyslexic can request an evaluation by contacting their campus or the Special Education Department.
UISD’s Dyslexia Proclamation event serves as a reminder of the district’s mission to empower all students, remove barriers to learning, and celebrate the resilience of those with dyslexia.
