Powell Watson Motors Donates $15,000 to UISD's 10th Annual Partners “Fore” Scholars Golf Tournament

United Independent School District, together with longtime community partner Powell Watson Motors officially kicked off the UISD 10th Annual Partners “Fore” Scholars Golf Tournament with exciting news, a $15,000 donation from Powell Watson to directly support UISD student scholarships.
Over the past decade, this tournament has grown into one of Laredo’s signature fundraisers for education, raising more than $500,000 in scholarships for graduating UISD seniors. This year, the event has already exceeded expectations, with more than $80,000 committed donations.
“Every single dollar goes straight back to students through our Partners for Scholars Program,” emphasized UISD Athletic Director Roberto “Bobby” Cruz.
Coach Cruz adds that this milestone 10th year shows just how much the community believes in supporting education.
“Every year this tournament gets bigger and better, and this year we’re blown away by the response. We’ve been sold out for weeks, but people are still finding ways to help, sending in donations, door prizes, and support of all kinds,” said Cruz. “That speaks volumes about Laredo’s generosity and commitment to our students.”
The tournament promises a day filled with great golf, food, fun, and some exciting prizes. Powell Watson Motors is putting up three cars for hole-in-one challenges, and Ashley Furniture is offering a $5,000 prize for the final hole challenge.
“We’ve been honored to partner with UISD for 10 years now, and it’s a joy to support students who may not otherwise have the chance to pursue higher education. Giving back has always been part of our family values, and this community gives to us every day, so it’s important that we give back in return,” said Zachary Powell, General Manager of Toyota of Laredo.
UISD Superintendent Dr. Gerardo Cruz also expressed his gratitude, highlighting how scholarships from this event make a real difference in students’ lives.
“I want to thank our title sponsor Powell Watson, and all of our community partners for helping make this event such a success. I also want to give a big thank you to all of our counselors and principals at our high schools who are in the daily grind making sure the needs of our students are met,” added Dr. Cruz. “Right now, many seniors may be asking themselves, ‘Do I go to college? Can I afford it?’ Fortunately, because of this program, there will always be an opportunity for our students here at United ISD.”
While competition may be fierce at the tournament, the heart of the event remains the same and that is giving students the opportunity to pursue their dreams through education.

“This tournament is an outstanding way to contribute back to our students even after they graduate from high school,” said UISD Board President Javier Montemayor. “This is one of the programs we encourage our community to please continue supporting. On behalf of the UISD Board of Trustees, we are beyond thankful for all of the sponsors and participants that have supported and continue supporting this great cause.”
UISD also extends a heartfelt thank you to all of our Partners in Education, including, Clear Choice Emergency Room, Cougar Bus Lines, Patria Office Supply, and dozens of additional sponsors. More than 60 door prizes, from TVs to golf gear, and local gift cards will be up for grabs at the golf tournament scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2025 at the Casa Blanca Golf Course.
