United High School Graduate Receives Tribute for Injured Firefighter Father

United High School Senior Gianna Garcia was preparing to graduate with the rest of the class of 2024 and celebrate her accomplishment with her family.

Her father, Laredo Fire Department Captain Angel Garcia, was responding to a warehouse fire with his fellow firefighters. Captain Garcia was gravely injured when the roof collapsed because of the blaze. He was placed in the intensive care unit at Doctor's Hospital. Gianna would receive her diploma while her father remained in Hospital.

His colleagues in the Laredo Fire Department stepped in.

Firefighters from his station and Laredo Fire Chief Guillermo Heard arrived in their emergency vehicles to greet Gianna as she walked out of Sames Arena. They brought a portrait of her father with them, and each of them gave her a rose and a congratulatory hug.

Although Gianna Garcia's father could not share the moment with his daughter, his colleagues in the Laredo Fire Department were quick to assume his place to congratulate her and celebrate this milestone in her life. “Your father is a hero,” said one UISD employee.

Captain Angel Garcia continues to recover from his injuries at Doctor's Hospital.
