UISD's Alexander HS Advances Students to State in UIL Theatrical Design

Two students from Alexander High School have advanced to the UIL State Competition with their submissions to the 2024 Theatrical Design competition, the sole students from the Laredo area. The competition will take place in May in Austin, Texas.

Senior, Hannah Vazquez and Junior, Anna Ramirez advanced with their individual projects in Costume Design and Marketing Design, respectively. They were coached by UIL Theatrical Design coach, AHS art teacher, Erika Buentello.

"Hannah and Anna have worked extremely hard on this project," said their coach. "Their designs are the culmination of several months of research, designing and revisions. I'm so proud of all their sustained effort on this project!"

Both students competed for the first time and were selected from amongst hundreds of entries to advance to this high level of competition. The UIL Theatrical Design competition challenges students to conceptualize designs for a specific theatrical production and to use a research-based approach to find a creative solution for their designs in their selected category.

"This year's competition was incredibly tough," adds Buentello. "The entries for the 2024 contest increased by 40%; so in order to advance, students had to make it through several challenging rounds of work with competitors from across the state."

This year, competitors created original designs for a theoretical production of Hadestown by Anaïs Mitchell, currently on view on Broadway in New York City.

Alexander High School has advanced and placed at the State Level of this competition for five consecutive years.
