UISD Special Olympics
Let the games begin with the lighting of the Flame of Hope. UISD officially opened the Special Olympic Games at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex where special athletes will compete in a variety of events this week. Highlights of the celebration include a parade of schools with all the athletes, coaches, teachers and principals, a torch run around the track with local law enforcement joining the students, and the lighting of the Flame of Hope by leaders of UISD and LISD.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. UISD hosts this event annually for all area schools, including Webb Consolidated ISD, Jim Hogg ISD, Harmony Academy, and Laredo ISD.
