United ISD Students and Former Students in the City Spotlight

It was a great night for United Independent School District students and former students who were presented Laredo Icon Awards from the City of Laredo's Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño. The presentations were made during the 2024 State of the City Address held at the TAMIU Center for the Fine and Performing Arts on January 25.

As a unique addition to this year’s State of the City, Mayor Dr. Trevino wished to implement the recognition of several special individuals in the Laredo community, including young Laredoans who have excelled and shown the utmost leadership values. For this reason, during the 2024 State of the City Address, Mayor Dr. Trevino presented the Laredo Icon Awards to several UISD students and former students.

Recipients of the 2024 Laredo Icon Community Awards:

Azul Garibi, Slimerella Slime Shop, Entrepreneur and Influencer (Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary.); Jenny Lozano “La Traviesa”, Boxer, first Olympic athlete in Laredo’s history, received by Coach Michelle Vela (Johnson H.S.); Mateo Hernandez, Senior at Alexander H.S., Boston University, School of Medicine research internship; Sierra Sanchez, Volleyball, United South H.S., LMT All-City and District 30-6A MVP, Best All-Around Athlete, United H.S. football team; undefeated 30-6A District Champs, Coach David Sanchez.

Also attending the event were UISD Board Member Frank Castillo and Associate Superintendent Mike Garza. UISD congratulates all the recipients.
