UISD Appoints Diana Escamilla-Flores as Bonnie L. Garcia Elementary School Principal

The United Independent School District proudly announces the appointment of Diana J. Escamilla-Flores as the new Bonnie L. Garcia Elementary School principal. Prior to stepping into her new role, Escamilla-Flores was the assistant principal at R.S. Killam Elementary School for nine years where she helped improve the overall academic progress of the campus. Escamilla-Flores brings a wealth of experience having worked at UISD for the last 16 years. She is excited to have the opportunity to contribute to her new school’s developmental journey. Escamilla-Flores' passion and commitment to student academic success has shaped and prepared her to lead Bonnie L. Garcia Elementary. Her goal is to be at the forefront of the new teaching methodology that will allow students to acquire skills needed for future success.

“I wanted to become a principal, especially in south Laredo, because I live in this community and have raised my children here,” said Escamilla-Flores. “It is important that I give back by helping shape the little minds of the future that maybe one day will be as devoted to their roots.”

Escamilla-Flores began her teaching career in 2007 at Perez Elementary where she instructed different subject areas for 3rd and 5th grade students. After developing and implementing comprehensive instructional strategies in the classroom, she collaborated in creating concept-based assessments as well as the district’s scope and sequence as a curriculum writer for elementary science and secondary math and reading. She then became a 5th grade Pathfinder, serving as an instructional leader, mentoring teachers who needed assistance, and developing intervention plans. In 2014, Escamilla-Flores was promoted to assistant principal for R. S. Killam Elementary where she honed her leadership skills for the last nine years. In addition, she served as summer school principal for Zaffirini Elementary, Cuellar Elementary, and Bonnie Garcia Elementary, to name a few.  Her expertise and proven track record of success have prepared her to foster a culture of academic excellence within the Bonnie L. Garcia Elementary community. In addition to her impressive academic achievements, Escamilla-Flores has also dedicated her off time to sponsoring the Student Leadership PBIS team.

Escamilla-Flores earned a Bachelor of Science with an Early Childhood Education Bilingual Specialization, and a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Texas A&M International University. She is certified in nine areas including: GT, Instructional Leadership Development and Professional Development and Appraisal System.

Escamilla-Flores is a mother to three sons and one daughter and has four grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, reading, and playing video games. United ISD congratulates Diana J. Escamilla-Flores on her well-deserved promotion to principal.
