UISD Appoints Martha Alvarez as United South High  School Principal

The United Independent School District proudly announces the appointment of Martha Imelda Alvarez as the new United South High School Principal. With an impressive career spanning over twenty years in education, Alvarez brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to her new role. She is a highly regarded and accomplished leader in the educational field. Her passion for education, strong work ethic, and dedication to student success have made her a standout figure in the academic landscape. Throughout her career, she has displayed exceptional skills in community engagement, turnaround leadership, instructional development, relationship building, and budget management. She has completed her 8th year as principal of Perales Middle School and is now returning to United South High School where she first began her career at UISD in 2011.  

Prior to her promotion, Alvarez served as the Principal of Raul Perales Middle School, where she led the successful turnaround of the campus. In her tenure, she oversaw the opening of the school, recruited and managed a new staff, and allocated district and community resources to implement an effective educational program. Under her leadership, the school achieved significant milestones, including a TEA report card “B” rating in 2018-2019, with four distinctions in Math, Science, Social Studies, and Post-Secondary Readiness.

Before her role at Raul Perales Middle School, Alvarez served as Principal at United South Middle School, where she demonstrated exceptional leadership by regaining the trust and engagement of the school community. Through her strategic analysis of data and implementation of instructional programs, the school achieved remarkable success, earning a TEA report card “A” rating with all seven distinctions in 2017-2018.

Alvarez began her career in education as a Special Education Teacher, where she honed her skills in supporting students with diverse needs and fostering strong relationships with families and staff. She later transitioned into administrative roles, serving as an Assistant Principal at J.C. Martin Elementary School, Memorial Middle School and United South High School. Throughout these positions, she exhibited a commitment to excellence in education and a dedication to providing professional development opportunities to teachers and staff.

“As the new leader of this amazing campus, it is my goal to shape a vision of academic success for all USHS students. I am excited to work together with the faculty and staff in creating a healthy and hospitable learning environment while cultivating leadership in others. I want to thank the UISD school board members and our Superintendent Mr. David Gonzalez for their support and recognition of my efforts and commitment,” said Principal Alvarez.

Alvarez holds a Master of Science in Educational Administration from Texas A&M International University, where she also earned a Master of Science and a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice. In her spare time, she loves reading, gardening and traveling with her family. She is married to her husband, Ricardo Alvarez of 26 years and together they have two children.
