United High School Students Win Stock Market Game Competition

Congratulations to United High School students in Mrs. Clarissa Gonzalez's Securities and Investments class for winning the Stock Market Game in the Rio Grande area this past fall. The SIFMA Foundation’s Stock Market Game is a 10-week simulation game where students from all over Texas participate by investing a hypothetical $100,000 trading stocks, bonds, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Participants apply research, critical thinking and analytical skills to make real-world financial decisions. Student Diego Ramirez took first place with a total equity of $118,679.96 and Alicia Lopez with a total equity of $113,607.55. Both students surpassed all others in their category with their returns on their investments. High school students who participate in the SIFMA Stock Market Game conduct research and follow global news that can impact financial markets, then place trades in real-time via computer or the SMG smartphone app, competing with peers in their classroom and with teams across the state to increase their portfolio value. In addition, students can choose socially responsible investments by selecting companies in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.

United High School also recognizes all the other students who ranked in the top 10. These students competed against approximately 200 participants. A special thanks to United High School Principal Mrs. Jessica Salazar and Securities and Investments Teacher, Mrs. Clarissa Gonzalez for supporting their students in the 10-week challenge.
