Family of Sylvia Lorraine Hines, Former United ISD Teacher and Administrator, Establish a Scholarship to Assist UHS and LBJ Grads With Laredo College Tuition
The family of former United ISD teacher Sylvia Lorraine Hines has established the Sylvia Lorraine Hines Memorial Scholarship to commemorate her legacy. Ms. Hines served United ISD for nearly three decades in several capacities, though she was most proud of her work as a teacher at United High School (UHS) and Lyndon B. Johnson High School (LBJ). She recently served as an Assistant Principal at LBJHS until her retirement in 2010.
Mr. David H. Gonzalez, United ISD Superintendent, joined the Hines family and Laredo College at the scholarship’s unveiling. Mr. Gonzalez stated, “Mrs. Lorraine Hines embodied a consistent drive to empower students to succeed regardless of limitations or background. Her legacy as an advocate for educating all students will continue through these scholarship opportunities.”
Ms. Hines’ true passion was being in the classroom and helping students who were most in need of patience, compassion, and understanding. Through the years, Ms. Hines taught dyslexic and non-native English-speaking students, where she felt she made the most significant impact.
The scholarship was established to assist graduates who attended the campuses she impacted the most throughout her career and plan to continue their studies at Laredo College (LC). The Hines family set up the initial scholarship fund for $25,000. However, LC made a contribution to match the initial amount, which brings the total scholarship contribution to $50,000.
The Hines family would like to encourage students who plan to graduate from UHS or LBJ and attend LC to apply for the memorial scholarship. The scholarship application process is open to all students, regardless of their majors. The Hines family would like to begin disbursing the scholarship funds this summer and are eager to help students continue their education through the scholarship fund. To start the application process, interested parties should contact the LC Donor Relations and Special Projects Department at 956-721-5812.
