United ISD held a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting for Elias Herrera Middle School on September 17, 2021. During United ISD's formative years, Mr. Herrera served as principal at Nye Junior High School, District Director of Lunch Programs, Director of Transportation, Director of Maintenance and Janitorial Services, Program Director of School Elections, District Discipline Hearing Officer, District Assistant Superintendent, Athletic Director, Interim Superintendent, and Director of Support Services. Mr. Herrera retired from United ISD in 1997 after 40 years of service and passed away in 2016 - leaving an endowment of excellence on which the district continued to build. Speakers included United ISD Board Parliamentarian Frank Castillo, Superintendent David H. Gonzalez, and members of the Herrera family.
Mrs. Olga Herrera recalled that her husband was a thoughtful and caring educator. "He had an amazing memory and remembered the names of all of the students in every graduating class for all the years he taught. He always expected the best from them but was also there to help them in any way possible. On behalf of myself, my children, and our entire family, I'd like to thank the United ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Gonzalez for honoring our patriarch in such a meaningful way. Elias would be humbled and extremely appreciative", she said. Elias Herrera Middle School is the district's 11th middle school and is located at 8800 McPherson Road.
