The United Independent School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos are pleased to announce Joseph C. Lopez as the new Director of STEP Academy.
Mr. Lopez has been with United ISD for 29 years and has vast experience in both the classroom and administration. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science and received commissions as Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from Texas A&I Kingsville. He received his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M International University and holds certifications in Special Education PK-12, Educational Administration, and Superintendent.
For the past 21 years, he has served as Assistant Principal of United High School and as a Special Education Teacher at United D.D. Hachar for 8 years. Prior to that, Mr. Lopez served on Active Duty in the United States Army, his duties included Platoon Leader, Battalion Supply Officer, Company Commander for The C Company, 1-63 Armor, HHC-1st Infantry Division, and Covina Recruiting Company Commander. He is currently retired as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Lopez, stated, “I'm excited to work with all STEP Academy stakeholders to create a safe and nurturing learning environment that promotes and encourages our students to develop the attitudes, responsibilities, knowledge, and skills that are essential for success in school and society.” He added, “While collaborating with parents and the community, we will support our students as they develop into life-long learners and responsible citizens. Teamwork makes the dream work.”
Mr. Lopez succeeds Mr. Rodriguez who is currently the Director for Fine Arts. He will assume his newly appointed position in July 2021.
