On November 12, 2019, students from Region One competed in the U.I.L. Congress Regional Meet in McAllen, TX. Competitors submitted legislation in September and researched the docket and prepared speeches in the months that followed. At the tournament, students lobbied, delivered speeches, and ultimately voted to pass or defeat the measures they had discussed. Johnson High School students Miranda Martinez and Joanna Luna placed 3rd and 4th (respectively), in the final round- qualifying them to compete in the State Congress Meet in January. Martinez and Luna are the only advancing students from Laredo. They are coached by Social Studies teachers Joshua Llamas and Christian Rubio.
