Students at United South High School 9th Grade Campus took part in a celebration of the traditional Day of the Dead by decorating a grand altar with photos of loved ones, marigolds, candles, and sugar skulls.
"The altar is a stunning display of tradition and a testament to the spirit of community that brings us together," said Associate Principal Karla Garza.
"We invited our students to create this beautiful altar, so they could partake in this powerful event, which reflects their culture and tradition. We have a lot of students learning English as a second language, and we want to honor and continue their traditions from Mexico."
The colorful event was organized mainly by students and teachers from the Spanish and Art classes, but everyone in the school is getting a chance to view and appreciate the Dia de Los Muertos altar, which is prominently located in the middle of the lobby where a special ceremony took place. The teachers and students read out loud all the various components that make up the altar and each significance.
English Teacher Angelica Garcia was the Mistress of Ceremonies. "We gather to honor a tradition that's as vibrant and alive as the memories of those we hold dear. Dia de los Muertos is a beautiful tradition that dates back centuries, blending indigenous beliefs with Spanish customs."
The event is considered a joyful occasion to remember that death is part of the cycle of life, and it's important to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed on.
"Each item in the altar is crafted with care and love to guide our ancestors back to us," said Garcia.
The event was a collaboration between the departments of Art, Spanish, English and the students. Music was provided by the United South High School's Mariachi Imperial de Sur, under the direction of Leonardo Galvan.
