About 500 elementary students from across the United Independent School District bowled their hearts out on Wednesday at the Special Olympics event held at Jett Bowl North.
Students giggled and got competitive, earning ribbons and medals at the bowling alley, where parents and volunteers gathered. And parents posed with their children against a backdrop while staff took pictures.
Miguel Chavez, UISD Special Education Coordinator, said the biggest benefit to the competition “is the inclusion of our students.”
He added, “We want to maximize their experience, recreational and competition-wise, so we obviously go all out to make the best event for our community and for our students who are having a lot of fun right now.”
On Thursday, middle school students will compete and on Friday high schoolers and Cherish Center students will participate in the bowling event. UISD is also partnering with Harmony School. More than 1,400 student athletes will have participated by the end of the event.
Chavez said he wanted to thank the district administration, cabinet and the staff and volunteers who supported and made the huge event possible.
Among the volunteers were student athlete volunteers who helped the little ones.
“It takes a village to make this happen and I want to thank this entire village for making this beautiful event amazing for our students,” Chavez said.
