United Independent School District is proud to announce that six of our schools have been designated as Purple Star Campuses by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The Purple Star Campus Designation recognizes Texas public schools that show their support and commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
The schools that have received the distinction for the 2024-25 school year are:
Antonio Gonzalez Middle School
Lamar Bruni Vergara Middle School
Los Obispos Middle School
Salvador Garcia Middle School
United High School
United South High School
To be eligible, campuses must designate a campus-based military liaison, create and maintain an easily accessible web page that includes information for military-connected students and their families, institute a campus transition program for military-connected students, and support a military family assistance initiative.
Children in military families often bear the burden of being separated from their mother or father while they deploy overseas. They often live with the stress of knowing their loved one may be in danger. In addition, children of active duty military personnel often go through multiple relocations that result in ending friendships, numerous cycles of adapting to new communities and schools, and feelings of isolation.
UISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gerardo Cruz commended the six schools on their accomplishment. "I am thrilled to congratulate our schools for being selected as Purple Star Campus designees! This prestigious recognition is a testament to the incredible work our teams have done to support military-connected students and their families," he said.
