United Independent School District will open a new middle school for the coming 2024-25 School Year.
Juan Roberto Ramirez Middle School will open its doors on August 14th for students. The spacious design of the new structure encompasses two stories and 110,050 square feet to accommodate 1,000 students. Construction was completed in two years at a cost of $22,345,480.
District administrators went on a guided tour of the school led by architect Randy Hohlaus of Alta Architects, who designed the building. They were also accompanied by District 6 Board Secretary Michelle Molina. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to support the development of this much needed middle school in the Mines Road area. This campus will provide our students the needed tools and technology from academics to athletics. Ramirez Middle will foster great leaders in our community,” said Molina.
Associate Superintendent of Administration Support Services Mike Garza said, “This facility will transform the Mines Road community for the better, and will give more students the opportunity to receive the quality education United ISD offers to the community.” Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Policies Rebecca Morales said, "We are thrilled about the opening of our brand new campus, Juan Roberto Ramirez Middle School, for the 2024-2025 school year. This facility represents a significant investment in our students’ futures and we eagerly anticipate the incredible achievements and experiences that await. Thank you to everyone who had a part in this for our students. We are also extremely grateful to our community for supporting the bond that made this happen. Go Rattlers!"
Highlights of the campus include: 27 classrooms, 4 science labs, 2 computer labs, 2 special education classrooms, an art classroom, and a home economics classroom. The Fine Arts wing will house a band hall, ensemble room, rehearsal room, 5 practice rooms, and a 10,340 square foot gymnasium furnished with weight and dressing rooms. The campus' main entrance will be fortified by security guards and UISD Police, who will utilize high-tech security to monitor all foot traffic entering and exiting the campus. The school will have camera surveillance systems and additional technology to observe indoor and outdoor activity within all campus perimeters.
The new campus is located at 402 Aquero Blvd. The school mascot is the Rattlesnake and the school colors are red and silver. The principal is Juan Herrera, formerly of Washington Middle School. “I am thrilled to have been selected as the first principal of Juan Roberto Ramirez Middle School! I, along with our Rattler Faculty and Staff, am excited to welcome our students to our beautiful state-of-the-art campus. We pledge to work together to establish a new tradition of excellence for the Mines Road Community,” said Herrera.
The school is named after former UISD District 6 Board Member Juan Roberto Ramirez, who gave a remarkable 20 years of service to the children of United ISD.
