Imagine being in first grade and the author of your first book? Two classes at Juarez-Lincoln Elementary School at D.D. Hachar authored two books, and their teachers could not be more proud. Teachers Cynthia Gonzalez and Ahilyn Robles helped their 34 students write, illustrate and publish two books.
It all started when they got an offer and free publishing kit from a company called Studentreasures earlier this school year. The classrooms got to pick their own topics, and each student made a contribution to the book with written copy and photos. The teachers supervised the project helping the students to edit and finalize the books. The two books are called Our Future and If I had a Magic Wand. The company Studentreasures Publishing provides a free copy of the book to each classroom, with additional copies available for the parents to purchase online.
The students celebrated the completion of their books with a presentation and reading in the school library, and each student got a certificate for taking the National Book Challenge by becoming young authors. A total of 34 students authored the books, writing about careers they wanted to pursue such as law enforcement, veterinary, medical and education. The students also detailed what they would do with a magic wand, such as stop littering, bullying and homelessness.
The principal, staff and librarians joined in the celebration at the Rio Bravo school by praising the children. Principal Roberto Ortiz told the students they should be very proud of their accomplishment, to join other well known authors like Dr. Seuss on the school's library shelves. The students were treated to a pizza and cupcake party after a reading of the two books and some photos to commemorate the event.
