Lyndon B. Johnson High School Announces New Girls Basketball Head Coach

Lyndon B. Johnson High School and the UISD Department of Athletics is proud to announce the selection of Gabriella Martinez as the next girls head basketball coach. The recommendation was made by Johnson High School principal Mr. Armando Salazar..

Coach Martinez is a UISD product and a graduate of Alexander High School, where she played basketball under Coach Lisa Haberkorn and Javier Reyes.  After high school, Coach Martinez graduated from TAMIU and began her teaching and coaching career at LISD in 2014.

For the past 8 years, Coach Martinez has been the lead varsity girls basketball assistant coach at Cigarroa High School under Head Coach Mary Tobias. During this time, Cigarroa has had great success with the girls basketball program as district champions and has made several appearances in the regional quarterfinals.

Principal Armando Salazar said, “we welcome Coach Martinez to Johnson High School. The committee and I were impressed with her recent success at Cigarroa and her own vision for our Lady Wolves program. We are excited to welcome her aboard and introduce her to our girls and our community.”

UISD Director of Athletics Bobby Cruz was equally excited about bringing Coach Martinez into the UISD family. “We are proud to introduce Coach Martinez as the next coach of the Lady Wolves basketball program. She has been an integral part of Cigarroa's success and we look forward to her arrival at LBJ and for her to begin working with our girls as soon as possible.”

Coach Martinez will be replacing Lisa Haberkorn. Coach Haberkorn will be retiring in December from teaching and coaching. UISD athletics would like to thank Coach Haberkorn for her dedication and years of service to UISD, having taught and coached at Alexander and Lyndon B. Johnson High Schools. She has always been the consummate professional and the District wishes her well in her retirement and future endeavors.
