United Middle School Teacher Recognized by KGNS and Attorney Tellez

One middle school teacher is starting off the Spring semester with a celebration after being recognized as Teacher of the Month, for the month of January 2023. Seventh grade English Language Arts teacher, Ms. Nikky Garcia received a surprise visit from local news station KGNS and Attorney at Law Joey Tellez. Ms. Garcia, who has been teaching for 2 years at United Middle School, was nominated by parents and peers for the teacher recognition program held every month. For Attorney Joey Tellez, it is important for him to recognize educators for all the hard work they do in making sure their students learn and succeed. 

“I am a product of UISD and I had very influential teachers that pushed me to get where I’m at today. I think teachers are underappreciated and they deserve the recognition. What we’re doing is just a small step, there should be a bigger deal made and more recognition for all the teachers and the hard work that they do,” said Tellez.

 Ms. Garcia says she loves her job and seeing her students succeed is not only her responsibility but also her reward.

“My favorite thing about teaching is being able to help my students. Sometimes they don't have anyone else to look up to, or that’s listening to them. So listening to them makes that connection and it helps my students do better,” said Ms. Garcia.

Representatives from KGNS along with Attorney Joey Tellez provided Ms. Garcia a gift basket that included a personalized Yeti cup, a Teacher of the Month t-shirt, a 250 dollar check among other goodies. Her classroom also got to enjoy some delicious donuts afterwards. Superintendent David H. Gonzalez and United Middle School Principal Rosana Arizola were also present to congratulate Ms. Nikky Garcia.
