United ISD Police Department - Honoring Those Who Serve and Protect

The United ISD Police Department has been in existence since 1994.

The United ISD Police Department is a group of dedicated professionals committed to supporting the district's mission by providing service-oriented enforcement of the law, maintaining the peace, and protecting our school community.

The Department is composed of the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, one Lieutenant, seven Sergeants, 78 sworn peace officers, three K-9 Handlers, 130 Security Officers, six Telecommunication Officers, and five staff members. Officers of the UISD Police Department are licensed peace officers of the State of Texas. They have full arrest powers and all rights, privileges, and immunities similar to municipal police officers.

Each high school, middle school, and elementary school has sufficient police and security officers assigned at all times.

Additionally, officers are assigned to the Training Division, Campus Crime Stoppers, Criminal Investigation Division, Field Training Program, Internal Affairs Division, Crisis Negotiation Team, and Drone Unit.

The Training Division is responsible for developing and conducting state-mandated and specialized continuing education. The training division is also responsible for ensuring that all licensed officers receive the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) mandated training hours to attain Intermediate, Advanced, and Master certifications. Through collaboration with local, state, and federal agencies, and the Laredo College Regional Law Enforcement Academy, the UISD Police training division utilizes the department's state-certified instructors. The UISD Police Department has many great instructors who teach classes, conduct in-service training, and perform other full-time duties. These instructors specialize in Defensive Tactics, Firearms Rangemasters, ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training), Civilian Response to Active Shooter, First Aid, CPR, AED, School-Based Law Enforcement, Crisis Intervention, Field Training, and other specialized areas of instruction. The division works diligently to raise the standards of training, increase officer safety, and maintain professionalism and integrity.

The Criminal Investigation Division is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations and case management for crimes against persons or property occurring within the jurisdiction of UISD.

The Internal Affairs Division is assigned to investigate police department personnel misconduct and citizen complaints against police personnel. The goal of internal affairs is to ensure that the department's integrity is maintained through a system of internal discipline where fairness and justice are assured by an objective and impartial investigation and review.

The Crisis Negotiation Team is trained to handle hostage situations. The negotiator will gain control of the situation by insisting on one-on-one talks, exploring the feelings underlining the other side's demands, and allowing heated emotions to diffuse over time.

A drone unit has been added to the department to help keep students safe. The mission of the Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) program is to provide aerial support assistance to Department personnel.

The Field Training Program is for new officers. It will help accomplish the department's mission of promoting a safe, secure learning environment for UISD students as officers guide them positively and professionally.

The Police Department exists to serve and provide our schools and facilities with a safe, drug-free, and fear-free learning environment. The Police Department supports the district's mission statement: United, We Inspire All Students.
