United ISD Celebrates Ribbon-Cutting for New Aquatic Center

After more than five decades, United ISD students finally have an Aquatic Center that is replete with amenities for swimmers of all ages and abilities. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 49,000 square foot facility (located at the Student Activity Center), was attended by Board Members, Superintendent David H. Gonzalez, Administrators, and luminaries including Congressman Henry Cuellar Webb County District Attorney Isidro "Chilo" Alaniz, and Webb County Clerk Margie Ibarra. Former UISD Athletic Director Frank Carter and former Superintendent Roberto J. Santos also attended the ribbon-cutting, which was underscored by the introduction of former and current UISD swimming champions from the district's four high schools.

The combination of pro-level swimming pools and lanes (equipped with cutting edge video/audio technology and displays), opens the door to many more UISD swimming and diving programs. This year, the district has taken its first steps towards that growth with the introduction of the Learn To Swim program for second-grade students. "The new aquatic complex is already generating substantial new opportunities for our students, and we are now equipped to host interscholastic, intercollegiate, and international competitions. This is one of the best facilities of its kind in the country," said UISD Athletics Director Bobby Cruz. The United ISD Aquatic Center is under the direction of coach Sam Fruia.
