The Food Services Department maintained an operating budget of $11.5 million during the 2002-2003 school year. The department initiated a Cook/Chill system at its new facility in August of 1997. Since that time, the system has allowed the department to increase productivity and created an efficient means of providing tasty and nutritious meals to United ISD students and staff. The department employs dietitians to develop nutritious and healthy menus that meet guidelines of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Texas Education Agency. Staff also provides nutrition instruction to students, teachers and parents. Special diets are developed for students due to medical conditions.
Throughout the school year, Food Services provides over 32,700 warm, healthy and nutritious meals to 34 schools just in time for serving; more than 1,200 snacks per day for students in the After School Program; and, 198 Special Diets to students with medical conditions. Food Services caters and offers banquet services to district schools and departments and, in the summer, operates more than 23 Summer Food Program Sites.
