Class Program received a
Certificate of Recognition
from the U.S. Border
Patrol and State Senator
Judith Zaffirini. The
event is sponsored by The
International Bank of
Commerce, McDonald’s
Restaurants, Royal Laser
Wash
and the City of Laredo
Public Access.
A teacher or
school official nominates
Head of the Class
recipients. The students
are required to write an
essay describing
themselves and their
various strengths and
weaknesses. The students
are recommended for their
drug-free lifestyles,
dedicated involvement with
extra-curricular
activities, and family and
community activities.
Linda
E. Zepeda, a
senior at
John
B. Alexander High
School, is the daughter
of Juan A. and Linda B.
Zepeda. In school, she is
a member of H.O.S.A.
(4 years), the Class of
2004 (4 years), National
Honor Society (3 years)
Spanish National Honor
Society (3 years), Cross
Country Team (3 years),
Track Team (2 years),
Science Honor Society (2
years), and Soccer Team (2
years). Zepeda has
received the National
Leadership and Service
Award, attended the
Presidential Classroom in
Washington D.C. and the
Doc Prep Program. While
employed at two different
jobs, she makes time to be
a teacher aide and
volunteer at the Laredo
Public Library, Doctor's
Hospital, and C.C.D.
Upon graduation,
Zepeda plans to attend
college and major in
Biology or Marine Biology.
She would also like to
attend medical school or
veterinary school.
Federico
Lozano,
a senior at
United High School, is
the son
of Federico and Gloria
Lozano. In school,
he is
a member of the
Class of 2004 (4 years),
U.I.L. (4 years - Science,
Math & English), Interact
Club, Student Council, and
KI Club. Lozano is
currently ranked number
one in his class and has
received Perfect
Attendance for the past
three years. He is the
recipient of the State
Board of Education
Excellence Award and the
Distinguished Alumni
Award. In the community
Lozano volunteers with the
Laredo Park and Recreation
Department, La Parroquia
San Jose, and Regent Care
Center. He is also a tutor
at Trautmann Middle
School.
Upon graduation,
Lozano plans to attend a
university and study Civil
Engineering.
Perla
Y. Silva,
a senior at
United South High School,
is the daughter of Leopoldo
and Maria G. Silva.
In school, she
is
a member of
the Rotary Interact Club
(3 years; President,
Senior year), National
Honor Society (3 years),
U.I.L. (3 years;
Journalism and Computer
Applications), Class of
2004 (2 years; Treasurer,
Junior and Senior year),
LULAC (2 years), Student
Council (2 years), and
Med-Ed (2 years). Although
Silva is currently
employed at a local
grocery store, she makes
time to be a tutor and a
Special Programs volunteer
at Texas A&M International
University. She also
volunteers with the Rotary
Club, during LULAC charity
events, and at the La
Cuenca Environmental
Facility.
Upon graduation, Silva
plans to attend a
four-year university and
obtain a degree in public
relations and a minor in
Business or Psychology.
Maribel
Higareda attends
Lyndon B. Johnson High
School. She
is the daughter of Jose
Luis and Juanita Hernandez.
In school
she is the
Captain of the Volleyball
and Track Teams (3 years)
and a member of the
Powerlifting Team (2
years), Soccer Team,
Basketball Team, Student
Council (2 years), and
National Honor Society. In
the community, Higareda
volunteers during church
activities and at the
annual H-E-B Feast of
Sharing.
In the future,
Higareda plans to attend a
four-year university and
become a nurse assistant
and a computer technician.
