The Special Education Program is designed to provide a free appropriate public education for students with disabilities, ranging in ages from 3 through 21. At the United Independent School District, all campuses serve students with disabilities through a variety of educational settings (see list below) and services based on the student's needs. In cases of students who need to be at home or in the hospital due to accident or illness for four weeks or longer, homebound teachers take assignments to the students. Students eligible to receive special education service are those who have been found to exhibit one or more disabling conditions as set forth by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA).
