Our Department
Our district Early Childhood/Literacy builds the foundation for a learning continuum from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It is based on a comprehensive curriculum, knowledge of child development, research, and best practices. It provides an enriched and supportive learning environment to nurture the intellectual, physiological, social, and emotional development of young children.
The pre-kindergarten program is composed of a full day program in 11 of our district campuses and 15 campuses have ½ day pre-kindergarten. The pre-kindergarten program is an intensive language development and early literacy program designed to give four-year old children who qualify for the program an opportunity to develop skills, concepts, and attitudes needed for school success. To enroll in the program, a child must be at least four years of age on or before Sept. 1 of the current school year and not speak or comprehend English or be eligible for free or reduced price lunch or receive services for the homeless parent or guardian active duty member or who was injured or killed while serving on active duty of the armed forces of the United States.
A full-day instructional program for kindergarten is conducted in each elementary school. The program is designed to promote academic skills, which provide a firm foundation for later school success.
