The Department of Instruction for Secondary Education in Reading is designed for the purpose of:

• Ensuring educational equity within and across schools,
• Providing explicit and systematic TEKS-based instruction,
• Creating and sustaining a learner-centered classroom environment,
• Providing research-based interventions for struggling readers,
• Monitor ongoing diagnostic practices that drive teaching and assessment decisions, and
• Fostering a comprehensive reading program including rich literature, language, and comprehension components with a balance of oral and written language.
