Our district Early Childhood/Literacy builds the foundation for a learning continuum from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It is based on a comprehensive curriculum, knowledge of child development, research, and best practices. Furthermore, it provides an enriched and supportive learning environment to nurture the intellectual, physiological, social, and emotional development of young children.
Pre-Kindergarten
The pre-kindergarten program is composed of a full day program in 2 of our district campuses and 24 campuses have ½ day pre-kindergarten. The pre-kindergarten program is an intensive language development and early literacy program designed to give four-year old children who qualify for the program an opportunity to develop skills, concepts, and attitudes needed for school success. To enroll in the program, a child must be at least four years of age on or before Sept. 1 of the current school year and not speak or comprehend English or be eligible for free or reduced price lunch or receive services for the homeless parent or guardian active duty member or who was injured or killed while serving on active duty of the armed forces of the United States.
Kindergarten
A full-day instructional program for kindergarten is conducted in each elementary school. The program is designed to promote academic skills, which provide a firm foundation for later school success.
Program Overview
The district curriculum is closely tied to the Pre-Kindergarten Guidelines and Kindergarten TEKS issued by the State of Texas for all students. Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten students receive instruction in all of the areas of language and literacy, mathematics, social studies, science, technology, health, visual arts, music, and physical education to prepare them for success in kindergarten and on to first grade and beyond.
Early Childhood curriculum requirements are aligned with a state-adopted curriculum that integrates subject areas and concepts throughout a strong literacy development program. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten are the foundational levels of curriculum matrices for language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. All in all, a learner–centered instruction builds upon a safe and nurturing environment that promotes growth in all areas of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
