The United Independent School District (UISD) Board of Trustees and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos officially announced today that UISD has earned a rating of Recognized from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for the 2009-2010 school year.
Upon receiving news from the Office of TEA Commissioner Robert Scott, Board members, together with Superintendent Santos, headed to the District’s Student Activity Complex (SAC), where all District administrators have been attending back-to-school leadership workshops, to inform them of the exceptional news.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to congratulate the students, parents, and all of our employees on this outstanding accomplishment,” said UISD Board President Pat Campos as she spoke to a packed auditorium. “It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child. This accomplishment is a testament to UISD’s mission of preparing students for life long success. As Board members we are extremely proud,” Campos continued as the audience cheered.
Unveiling a new, modified version of a District logo that highlights the District’s TEA Recognized status, Superintendent Santos also congratulated administrators, as well as the faculty, staff, and department members for their tremendous work.
“We accomplished this goal because of the belief we have that all students can learn and that we will do what it takes to help them be successful. Congratulations and keep up the excellent work that you do for our students,” Santos said. He also thanked students for their outstanding academic performance on the TAKS test as well as parents and the community for their support.
Also addressing the audience was Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Pamela R. Juarez who said the TEA rating is the direct result of the District’s dedication to quality instruction.
“We will continue to work together and remain committed to the continuous goal of academic success for all students,” Juarez said. She thanked administrators for their leadership and teachers for their dedication in the classroom.
TEA assigns all Texas public school districts annual ratings of Exemplary, Recognized, Academically Acceptable, or Academically Unacceptable based on student performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test. In order to receive a Recognized rating, at least 80 percent of the students tested must meet the passing standard for the subjects and grades tested. Ratings also take into account longitudinal completion rates and annual dropout rates.
The news of the District’s esteemed TEA designation also comes at a time when UISD will be celebrating its 50th anniversary during the 2010-2011 school year. Currently, the District is planning an event for all employees to celebrate both of these hallmark achievements before the start of the new school year.
