UISD Board Member Frank Castillo Honors United H.S. Varsity Football Team for an Outstanding Year

The United High School Longhorns' varsity football team had a year to remember, and the community continues to praise them as champions.  UISD Board Member Frank Castillo, District 7, represents the school and wanted to join in the accolades.

During a special ceremony at the United High School library April 9, Castillo presented each football team member with a commemorative coin made especially in their honor for having achieved excellence during their outstanding season. The coin lists each victory along the way, Regional Semi-Finalist, Area Champions, Bi-District Champions and 30-6A District Champions.

The students and coaches, who were also treated to a special luncheon in their honor, were humble and appreciative. The event brought together the school staff that helped to coordinate the games and several guests who took the opportunity to praise the young men and give them well wishes in their future endeavors.

Guest speakers included: Dr. Tyler King, City Council Member, District VI; Hector Perez, Assistant Superintendent for Technology, Representing Administration; Coach Juan Botello, District Athletics Coordinator; Jessica Salazar, Campus Principal; and David Sanchez UHS Head Football Coach.

Mr. Castillo said the presentation was for success which was earned and pursued over the past several years, culminating in the tremendous victories of 2023-24!  A big football fan, Castillo enjoyed the victorious season and wanted to mark this occasion with a special tribute.

"I have always been a fan of commemorative coins, and this is what I brought to our team today," said Castillo.  "I think their achievements mean a lot to our community and our city.  They performed very well and represented all of us. I am thrilled to be here to share in their joy, recognize and celebrate with them and their accomplishments. Their parents should also be very proud."

"They are a great team with sportsman-like qualities, which is something we should promote with all of our youth. We wish them good luck in all they plan to do in the future," he added.

A total of 13 coaches lead this team to victory.  The team was previously recognized by the entire UISD Board of Trustees and the City of Laredo and the Mayor. Coach Sanchez said they are all very appreciative of everything that happened this year. He believes this is a special group of young men.

"There's no doubt the chemistry was there; the way they played for each other was really special," said Coach Sanchez.

"One of the most special groups I've had here at United High School; You can feel the love they have for each other and the commitment to every game.  We knew we were going to get the best out of them."

29 UHS football seniors are graduating this year, but the coach says they are ready to tackle the next season.
